mel bryant is an artist living & working in indianapolis, IN. from creating books on flowers at the age of 7 to feeling ecstatic in 10th grade biology when the teacher assigned illustrated notes (when the rest of the class groaned,) they knew that art was the only path. after graduation, melissa pursued a bfa in painting & drawing at herron school of art. since then, they’ve had 4 children & has created many unique bodies of work including; mixed media/digital illustrations of pets, landscapes, and food stuffs, abstract/geometric paintings with textiles, and colored pencil drawings of moody houseplants. the latest focus had been colored pencil drawings of local flora & fauna, etc with some digital editing. by far the most involved & largest body of work that they’ve produced, mel is also the proudest of how many people have engaged & connected to it.

over the last 3 years, mel bryant has changed the proverbial landscape of what modern, nature-based illustrations & education look like. in a photo-realistic, yet unique and modern style, they have created over 1500 locally native flora & fauna, etc species through rich & vibrant colored pencil drawings. these are arranged by collection, from class to family, and also by color, with much thought given to clean design and species identification.

the combination of growing up in the woods, completing an advanced master naturalist program some 8 years ago, and poking around in wild areas as much as possible have all been inspiring to this artist. they are thankful to exist & create in the intersection of education, nature, and art.
